i. She's never found the courage to tell her how she really feels. It's spoken in stolen glances, soft smiles on her lips, and words that never seem adequate enough to share. She wishes Anna could read her mind and ascertain the depth and breadth of her affection. Instead, Anna notices her pulling away.
Loneliness replaces exuberance on her fair countenance. Where once a smile never faltered, seldom do they now appear. She aches and yearns and mourns for what she's only dreamed about. Time has passed by their innocence. No longer does she take for granted the easy cadence of their youth.
Slowly do they drift apart, helpless against the relentless current of the years. It isn't long before they're strangers in each other's eyes, left only with wistful memories of days gone by. They work. They endure. They grow older. Day in, day out- it's all the same.
And then they realize what they've been missing all this time. Is it too late? Was it ever true? These feelings wrap around them and for a brief moment, they're transported. A second chance. A wary smile.
She reaches for her hand and her fingers curl around her own. At last, their silence has found words.

She takes Anna's hand in hers, loving the softness and warmth it gives. Their eyes meet and her smile is filled with affection. It's a wonder they even found each other again.
Anna returns the gesture, but a ghost of Maya's. There lies a sadness in Anna's eyes that she can't figure out how to breach. Time spent apart has aged them, changed them, made them into people they don't understand. And above that, beyond the aching loneliness that threatens to consume them, lies the need to love and belong.
Maya squeezes her hand in an effort to make a connection and break down her barriers. It's a weak attempt but the feel of their fingers twining together stirs a fire she thought had gone out. She looks at the way they join together, staring until she can't tell where one ends and the other begins.
They're a long way from being all right, but it's a start. Anna tilts her face to the sun and smiles her first real one in too long. Hope blooms in her chest and she feels her soul soar.
